Heat pump brands compared: Daikin, Mitsubishi, Vaillant, Nibe, Bosch and more

Heat pump brands compared: Daikin, Mitsubishi, Vaillant, Nibe, Bosch and more

More than 20 heat pump brands are active in the Netherlands. Seven of them together serve ~80% of the market. Differences aren't really in COP or SCOP — all A+++ models score between 4.0 and 5.0 — but in service network, noise, refrigerant and total cost of ownership. This guide lays out the strengths and weaknesses per brand.

Comparison table: main brands in the Netherlands

Brand Origin SCOP (A7/W35) Noise (dB at 1 m) Refrigerant All-electric price NL dealer network
Daikin Japan 4.6-5.2 37-42 R32, R290 €14,000-€22,000 ~550 dealers
Mitsubishi Electric Japan 4.4-4.9 39-46 R32, R290 €13,500-€21,000 ~400 dealers
Vaillant Germany 4.8-5.3 37-41 R32, R290 €15,000-€23,000 ~350 dealers
Nibe Sweden 4.5-5.0 40-45 R290, R410A €18,000-€26,000 ~200 dealers
Bosch Germany 4.4-4.9 40-44 R32, R410A €13,000-€20,000 ~400 dealers
LG Korea 4.3-4.8 40-45 R32, R290 €12,000-€18,000 ~250 dealers
Samsung Korea 4.2-4.6 42-46 R32 €11,000-€17,000 ~200 dealers

Prices include indoor + outdoor unit plus average installation (2025), excluding ISDE subsidy.

Daikin

Strong: The largest dealer network in the Netherlands — rapid service, usually a technician within 48 hours. Altherma 3 M (R32) and Altherma 4 (R290) are the most chosen models in the mid-range. Quiet operation, solid app (ONECTA).

Weak: Slightly pricier than Asian competitors. Spare parts sometimes take 2-3 weeks for uncommon faults.

For: Owners who prioritise service and continuity, with budget €15,000-€22,000. Daikin performs consistently in long-term tests (test.aankoop.be, Consumentenbond).

Mitsubishi Electric

Strong: Robust Ecodan line, known for reliability in frost (down to -25 °C with R290). Solid COP in Dutch climate. Two-zone control standard.

Weak: Older models (PUHZ series) relatively loud (45-46 dB at 1 m). User app (MELCloud) less polished than Daikin.

For: Homes in rural areas or with extensive underfloor heating — the modulating R-series leverages multiple zones well.

Vaillant

Strong: Highest SCOP in mid-market (aroTHERM plus with R290: 5.3 at A7/W35). Very quiet (37 dB at 1 m in Super Silent mode). Dutch service distributed across three locations (Almere, Utrecht, Maastricht) — short response times.

Weak: Dealer availability outside the Randstad sometimes limited. Price premium of 8-12% over LG or Samsung.

For: Owners wanting maximum efficiency and low noise, willing to pay 10% more for service and build quality. aroTHERM plus is annually chosen in German Stiftung Warentest ratings.

Nibe

Strong: Swedish brand, specialist in ground-source heat pumps (F1155, F1255 series). Proven in cold climates. R290 in newer models.

Weak: Higher entry price (€18,000+). Dutch dealer network limited to ~200 — service outside the major cities can be a concern.

For: Detached homes with ground-source options (borehole, horizontal loop). Not the cheapest for a standard terraced home with air-to-water.

Bosch

Strong: German solid-build, shared service with Nefit (gas boilers). Widely available in the Netherlands. Compress 7000i AW is a proven workhorse.

Weak: Many models still on R32; full R290 line only from 2026. Noise average (40-44 dB), not top-tier quiet.

For: Owners already on Nefit or Bosch CH wanting continuity. Good hybrid option with Bosch Compress 3400i AW.

LG and Samsung

Strong: Sharp pricing (€11,000-€18,000 full set). Modern design, quiet units (R290 models). Long factory warranty (often 10 years on compressor).

Weak: Service network less deep than Daikin/Vaillant/Bosch. Complex failures can mean waiting for parts (especially Samsung).

For: Budget-conscious consumers willing to pick the installer carefully. LG Therma V R290 is increasingly recommended by independent advisors.

Niche brands: Stiebel Eltron, Viessmann, Panasonic, Atlantic

  • Stiebel Eltron (Germany): High-end, premium. SCOP 5.0+. Priced 20-30% above Daikin. Limited dealers.
  • Viessmann (Germany): Part of Carrier Global since 2023. Vitocal line (250-A, 300-A) excellent. Good price-quality.
  • Panasonic (Japan): Aquarea line, especially strong in air-to-air (AC with heat pump function). SCOP slightly below Daikin/Mitsubishi.
  • Atlantic (France): Good price-quality, but very limited Dutch dealer network. Long wait on breakdowns.

Refrigerant: R32 vs R290

This is the most important technical choice for the coming years. Under the EU F-gas Regulation 517/2014, high-GWP refrigerants are phased out:

  • R410A (GWP 2088): banned in new installations from 2025.
  • R32 (GWP 675): transitional, available until at least 2030.
  • R290 (propane, GWP 3): future-proof. More units switching.

For new builds or major replacements in 2025/2026, prefer R290. For a limited-budget renovation, R32 is still acceptable.

What actually matters in brand choice?

In 12 years the brand may not exist, but your installer probably will. That relationship is usually more important than the brand:

  1. Dealer network in your region. Less than 20 km from home there should be a certified InstallQ or STEK-certified company servicing this brand.
  2. Spare parts availability for 10+ years. Manufacturers are required to stock parts for 10 years, but in practice sometimes run out sooner.
  3. App and user control. A good app saves installer visits. Daikin ONECTA, MELCloud, Vaillant myVAILLANT are the best. Bosch Home Connect and LG ThinQ are average.
  4. Noise in night mode at 1 metre. Check manufacturer LPA, not LWA.

Frequently asked questions

Which heat pump brand is best in 2026?

Depends on priority. For service: Daikin. For efficiency: Vaillant. For price-quality: LG R290 or Bosch Compress. For ground-source: Nibe. For cold climates: Mitsubishi Ecodan R290.

Is more expensive always better?

No. The difference between a Samsung (€11,000) and a Daikin (€16,000) in SCOP is 0.3-0.5 points — that's €80-€120 per year in lower electricity. Service quality and warranty handling often matter more over 15 years than COP.

Which brand is quietest?

Vaillant aroTHERM plus (37 dB at 1 m in Super Silent), Daikin Altherma 3 M (39 dB) and LG Therma V R290 (40 dB) are the quietest air-to-water heat pumps on the Dutch market.

How important is the refrigerant?

More relevant than many realise. R290 (propane) is future-proof, better for climate and often quieter. R32 is fine for another 5-10 years. R410A you don't buy new anymore.

Which brand has the best warranty?

Vaillant (5 years standard + extendable to 7), Nibe (5 years compressor), LG (10 years compressor). More important than length: whether labour is also covered and whether a certified service partner exists within 50 km.

Should I wait for R290 models?

For new installations in 2026, R290 models are widely available from Daikin, Vaillant, LG and Nibe. For replacing an R410A/R32 system in 2025, no need to wait — the premium is €500-€1,500, recouped in 2-3 years.
